What is Thai massage? A friendly beginner's guide

The short answer

Thai massage is a traditional bodywork practice from Thailand. It is usually done fully clothed and without oil, using rhythmic pressure from the palms and thumbs combined with gentle, assisted stretches. Many people describe it as feeling like someone is doing yoga for you.

Where Thai massage comes from

Thai massage has been practised in Thailand for centuries. In Thai it is called nuad thai, and it grew from a mix of local healing traditions with influences from Indian and Chinese medicine.

In 2019, UNESCO added nuad thai to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. That recognition reflects how important the practice is to Thai culture, where it is still taught and passed down today.

Thai massage is often described as yoga that someone else does for you: you relax, and your therapist does the moving.

What happens during a Thai massage

If you have only had oil massages before, a traditional Thai massage will feel quite different. Here is how a typical session flows.

  1. 01

    A quick chat

Your therapist asks about any sore spots, injuries or areas to avoid, and how firm you like the pressure.

  2. 02

    Rhythmic pressure

Using palms, thumbs and sometimes elbows, they work along the body with slow, rhythmic pressure, usually starting at the feet.

  3. 03

    Assisted stretches

Gentle stretches move your legs, back and shoulders through a comfortable range of motion. You simply relax and breathe.

  4. 04

    Finishing touches

Most sessions end with the neck, shoulders and head, so you leave feeling calm and grounded.

What to wear to a Thai massage

Because traditional Thai massage is done without oil, you stay fully clothed. Comfortable clothing that lets you move freely is ideal.

Loose, comfortable clothing is all you need.

Before your first Thai massage

  • Wear loose, stretchy clothing, or ask if a change of clothes is available
  • Avoid a heavy meal in the hour before your session
  • Arrive a few minutes early so you are not rushed
  • Let us know about injuries, recent surgery or if you are pregnant
  • Tell your therapist straight away if the pressure feels too strong

Traditional Thai massage or Thai oil massage?

Both use Thai techniques, but they feel quite different. The right choice depends on whether you want to stretch and loosen up, or simply sink into relaxation.

Does Thai massage hurt?

It should not. Thai massage can feel firm and some stretches will feel like a good, deep release, but it should never be painful.

If you would like something gentler, a Relaxation Massage uses soft, flowing strokes. If you love strong pressure, ask about Deep Tissue & Muscle Relief.

Who is Thai massage good for?

Thai massage suits a wide range of people. It is especially popular with anyone who feels stiff from long hours at a desk, people who enjoy stretching, and those who like a massage that leaves them feeling energised rather than sleepy.

  • Desk workers with tight hips, backs and shoulders
  • Active people who want to loosen up between training sessions
  • Anyone curious to try an authentic Thai experience

If you have a medical condition, an injury or you are pregnant, check with your doctor first and let us know before you book so we can suggest the right treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Do you keep your clothes on for a Thai massage?

Yes. Traditional Thai massage is done fully clothed and without oil, so wear something loose and comfortable. Thai oil massage is different: you undress to your comfort level and are draped with towels.

How long is a Thai massage?

At Essence Thai, traditional Thai massage is available from 30 to 90 minutes. A 60 minute session is a good starting point for your first visit.

Is Thai massage painful?

It should not be. It can feel firm and the stretches can feel deep, but you can ask for softer or firmer pressure at any time.

What is the difference between Thai massage and Thai oil massage?

Traditional Thai massage uses pressure and assisted stretching with no oil, while Thai oil massage combines Thai techniques with smooth, flowing oil strokes for a more soothing feel.
